Silence hung heavy during the ride home. Even Pansy seemed to understand the magnitude of the scene they had witnessed. After climbing from Daisy’s car, Poppy breathed deeply before exhaling and entering the greenhouse. As she closed the distance to Danny, he removed his cap and swiped his hand across his forehead.

“How’d it go—” He stared at her. “You look different.”

She swallowed. “I tried a little eye makeup. I hope you don’t mind.”

“You look even more beautiful.”

“I’m glad you approve.” Poppy gazed into his eyes. “Today I discovered how much your father loved my mother.” As she shared details of their visit, Danny broke eye contact and seemed to stare into space.

When she finished, he popped his hat back on, whipped around and strode away. He’d need time to come to terms with what he had just heard.

Poppy walked out of the greenhouse and headed to the kitchen. Tonight she’d fix Danny’s favorite comfort meal. She lifted her phone off the counter and checked the screen. One voicemail. Her posture hunched as she pressed play and listened to the housekeeper’s message. Margaret couldn’t take two minutes to refuse her supper invitation? Did all rich people delegate uncomfortable tasks to the help?

Poppy erased the message. “I’m not giving up on you, Margaret Butler. Somewhere deep within you beats the heart of a mother.”
